Grid Connection

The Aspen site is expected to connect to the UK onshore grid as early as 2028, with NESO designating the Fetteresso sub-station in Aberdeenshire as the preferred connection point.

NESO (formerly National Grid ESO) is the organisation responsible for operating the UK’s electricity grid. With more than 30GW of offshore wind leases now awarded, NESO launched the Holistic Network Design (HND) exercise in 2021 to optimise grid connections based on timing, cost, environmental and social impact amongst other factors.

The INTOG projects were included in the HND Follow-Up Exercise (HNDFUE), which concluded in September 2024. Following this exercise in September 2024, the NESO Board recommended the Fetteresso location at Stonehaven as the grid connection location and this was selected for its cost-efficiency for consumers and its feasibility of completion by 2028.

Aspen’s onshore and offshore transmission survey works have been undertaken aligned with the NSEO recommendation.
